How I Solve Discouragement and You Can Too
Overcoming Spiritual Discouragement with Scripture
Everyone feels discouraged at some point. Just realizing that is an important step in overcoming discouragement.
At one level, we know everyone feels discouraged, but when we’re in the midst of it—especially when it hits hard—we tend to forget that. Feelings of discouragement are very common.
Our feelings are not facts, but they are powerful. Part of personal growth and spiritual maturation is knowing how to handle temptations and harmful emotions.
There are many biblical strategies for overcoming discouragement, and it often takes some experimentation to see what works best for us individually. Here are a few powerful ways I use Scripture to defeat discouragement, and I trust they can help you as well.
1. Use Scripture for Discouragement: Write Down Bible Verses and Statements for Spiritual Battles
1 Corinthians 10:13 (ESV) reminds us that every temptation we face is “common to man” and that God is faithful to provide a way of escape so that we can endure it.
All temptations are common to man, but some temptations—including discouragement—are more common to us than others. Ephesians 6:11 (ESV) encourages us to, “Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the schemes of the devil.”
If we put on God’s armor, we can stand against and defeat the devil’s schemes. If we don’t, we leave ourselves vulnerable to spiritual discouragement.
Not every negative emotion is a demonic attack, but some are. Even those that are not often come from the law of sin and death that is active in our fallen world (Romans 8:1–2, ESV).
Feeling hopeless and discouraged is not God’s plan for us. The kingdom of God is righteousness, peace, and joy in the Holy Spirit (Romans 14:17, ESV).
Be Proactive in Overcoming Discouragement
If discouragement is a consistent struggle for you, write down scriptures on discouragement that will help renew your mind. Use them preventatively and when feelings of discouragement arise.
2. Overcoming Discouragement by Renewing Your Mind with Biblical Truth
Based on Scripture, I remind myself of three key truths:
Everyone feels discouraged at times.
Nothing great is achieved easily.
I don’t have to let discouragement win.
Jesus said multiple times, “Do not let your heart be troubled…” (John 14:1, ESV). That means we have a choice in how we respond to discouragement.
Here are a few powerful Bible scriptures on discouragement that I use to fight back:
Hebrews 6:12 (ESV) – “Through faith and patience we inherit the promises.”
Philippians 4:6–7 (ESV) – “Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus.”
There are many more scriptures for discouragement that can help us shift our mindset. When we bring our struggles to God in prayer and trust His promises, He grants us supernatural peace to guard our hearts and minds.
3. Read and Act on Hebrews 3:13: Defeat Christian Discouragement Through Community
Hebrews 3:12–13 (ESV) warns us:
“Take care, brothers, lest there be in any of you an evil, unbelieving heart, leading you to fall away from the living God. (13) But exhort (encourage) one another every day, as long as it is called ‘today,’ that none of you may be hardened by the deceitfulness of sin.”
Even though we are believers in Jesus, we must stay spiritually alert to things that tempt us to doubt God and His Word. Unbelief is one of the biggest barriers to connecting with God and receiving His promises.
Why Daily Encouragement Matters
The Bible teaches that we should encourage one another daily. Sin is deceitful, and discouragement in the Bible is often linked to doubt and isolation. One of God’s greatest antidotes for discouragement is receiving regular encouragement from fellow believers.
Being part of a small group that actively lifts one another up in faith, dreams, and discipleship can be transformative. It is a biblical prescription for keeping our hearts tender, trusting, and believing in God’s faithfulness.
Final Thoughts: Overcoming Spiritual Discouragement is Possible
These three biblical strategies have helped me overcome discouragement, and I trust they will help you too.
Feelings of discouragement will never completely disappear, but we can learn to manage and defeat them through faith.
I have never met anyone who is “too encouraged.” The downward pull of sin and the constant attacks of the enemy are part of life. However, through Scripture, prayer, and Christian community, we can consistently overcome spiritual discouragement and walk in victory.
The great news is that while discouragement may come, it doesn’t have to control us. With the power of God’s Word, we can defeat discouragement and live in the peace and joy of the Holy Spirit.
My goal is to help busy believers experience God more deeply, grow consistently—both spiritually and personally—and confidently live out their unique purpose.
